Scanning electron micrograph of insulin crystal
Finding
Blindness, kidney failure, amputations, heart attacks, strokes and premature death - these are some of the devastating complications suffered by people with type 2 diabetes. Building on the huge success of an earlier clinical trial, the same research team completed a new international trial, finding that rosiglitazone, a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, cuts the risk of developing the disease by 60%.
Impact
The DREAM trial (Diabetes REduction Approaches with ramipril and rosiglitazone Medications) provides new strategies for preventing and delaying the onset of diabetes, helping people live longer, healthier lives.
Team
Drs. Hertzel Gerstein (left), professor of medicine at McMaster University, and Salim Yusuf (right), a cardiologist at McMaster, were co-investigators on the study, which involved 191 clinics in 21 countries.
